This week, we take a look at the origins of Broadview Heights’ name, which comes from its distinctive hilly terrain—some of the highest points in Cuyahoga County reach nearly 1,275 feet above sea level. The city’s landscape has long shaped its identity, offering a unique blend of elevation and natural beauty that continues to define the community today.
Situated about 15 miles south of downtown Cleveland, Broadview Heights spans roughly 13 square miles, encompassing a mix of neighborhoods and open spaces. The area’s early history traces back to 1811, when surveyor Seth Paine became the first white settler in the region, then part of Brecksville Township. His arrival marked the beginning of a journey that would eventually lead to the city we know today.
