Terms of Use
The rules for using Broadview Heights Today. Plain English, and short.
These terms are an agreement between you and [REVIEW: operating entity legal name], who runs Broadview Heights Today. By using the site you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.
In force from [REVIEW: effective date].
Who may use this site
Anyone may read the site. To write anything β a review, a comment, a business listing β you need an account, and you need to confirm your email address first.
This site is not built for children. You must be 13 or older to hold an account here. If you are under 18, please ask a parent before you sign up.
Your account
- Accounts are for real people. One person, one account.
- Use an email address you actually control. We send confirmation and sign-in messages to it.
- Do not pretend to be someone else β a neighbour, a business owner, a council member, or a member of our staff.
- Keep your password to yourself. Anything posted from your account is treated as posted by you. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has got into it.
- You can hide your public profile, or ask us to close your account, from your profile settings.
Business listings
A listing must be created by someone entitled to represent that business β the owner, or somebody the owner has asked to do it. Do not create a listing for a business you have no connection to, and do not claim one that is not yours.
- New listings are read by a person before they go on the directory. That takes a little while. You will see it as βpendingβ in your account until then.
- Rewriting a live listing sends it back for another read. This is not us being difficult β it stops an approved listing being quietly turned into something else.
- Claiming a listing that already exists is a request, not a switch. A person checks it and decides. Nobody gets control of a real business's listing automatically.
- Everything you put in a listing β address, phone number, email, website, opening hours β is published. Do not put anything in there you would not want on a public web page.
- You can take your listing off the directory at any time from your account. Reviews are hidden with it rather than deleted, and they come back if you put the listing back.
What you post stays yours
You keep ownership of everything you write and every photograph you upload. You are not signing it over to us.
By posting it here you give us permission to store it, to show it on this site, and to resize or re-encode pictures so they fit the page and load quickly. That permission lasts while the content is on the site and for as long as we need to keep our records of it β see the Privacy Policy for what those records are.
Only post what is yours to post. If you upload a photograph somebody else took, or text somebody else wrote, you are telling us you have the right to. If you think something on this site is yours and should not be here, use our copyright takedown route.
Reviews
A review must be your own first-hand experience of that business. Not a rumour, not something a friend told you, not a review of a different branch or a different company.
- Do not review your own business, and do not review a competitor.
- Do not write a review in exchange for a discount, a free item or a favour.
- One review per business per person. You can edit yours later.
- Reviews are published straight away. Some are held for a person to read first β usually because they contain links or contact details, or because something about the pattern of posting looked odd. If yours is held, your account will say so.
- We keep earlier versions of an edited review. That is on purpose: a five-star review that is quietly rewritten into a one-star accusation after the owner has publicly thanked the reviewer makes the owner look like they agreed with it.
- The business owner may reply to your review once, in public, under it.
The full rules for reviews, comments and business posts are in the Community Guidelines, and they are part of these terms.
Things you must not do
- Impersonate a person, a business, the city, or this site.
- Harass, threaten or intimidate anybody, here or by using something you found here.
- Post somebody's private details β a home address, a personal phone number, a workplace, a photograph of them they did not agree to.
- Post advertising, link spam, or the same text over and over.
- Post anything hateful, obscene or unlawful.
- Run bots, scrape the directory in bulk, or try to get round our rate limits.
- Try to break into the site, other people's accounts, or the machine it runs on. That includes uploading a file that is not really a picture.
Moderation, suspension and removal
Moderators can hide or remove a review, a comment, a post or a picture, suspend a listing, or suspend an account. We do that when something breaks these terms or the guidelines β and, in clear cases, we do it before we have heard both sides, because leaving harassment or somebody's home address on a public page while we deliberate is not a neutral choice.
If we act on something you wrote, we tell you in your account. We keep a record of the decision, including after the content itself is gone. If you think we got it wrong, write to us and say so β the address is at the bottom of this page.
You can stop using the site at any time, and you can ask us to close your account. We may also stop providing the site, or part of it, at any time.
What this site is not
- We do not settle arguments between residents and businesses. If you have a dispute with a business, that is between you and them. We are not an arbitrator, a consumer body or a court, and asking us to remove a review because you disagree with it is not something we can act on by itself.
- We do not vouch for the businesses listed here. A listing is not a recommendation, a rating is not a guarantee, and we do not check anyone's licenses, insurance or qualifications. Do your own checks before you hire somebody.
- Reviews are other people's opinions, not ours. We host them. We do not confirm that any of them is accurate.
- The site is provided as it is. We work to keep it up and correct, but we do not promise it will be available, complete or error-free.
